Hey Dayton Futbol Academy Families,
Now that the Spring 2026 season is officially underway, there is a specific kind of energy on the fields. For our youth teams, this season isn't just about the schedule of games we have ahead. It is about continuing to lay the foundation for a lifetime of love for the beautiful game.
At Dayton Futbol Academy, we believe in a very specific truth: experience and consistent practice will exceed natural talent every single time. Talent might provide a head start, but it is the hours spent on the ball, the repetitions in practice, and the willingness to try new things that truly build a player. We want our players to understand that skills are like an investment. When they work on their touch, their passing, and their vision today, those abilities compound over time. What seems like a small improvement this week becomes a massive advantage two or three years down the road.
Development over Labels
You may notice that we do not spend our energy dividing our youngest teams into rigid categories like an "A team," "B team," or "C team." We aren't interested in labeling children before they have even had the chance to fully discover their potential. As parents, it is so easy to get caught up in the prestige of a label. We want to be able to say our child is on the "top team," but the players themselves usually just want one thing: to play.
I learned this lesson firsthand growing up playing in Cincinnati. I remember a year when I didn't make the "top team" at Cincinnati United Premier. That team was far away and cost a whole lot more. At the time, it felt like a disappointment, but it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Instead of traveling long distances for a high pressure environment I wasn't ready for, I stayed local and played with my friends at Kolping SC.
By playing locally with people I cared about, I actually got to play the game. I played, and played, and played. That is when my growth truly compounded. I wasn't in "survival mode," scared to make a mistake or lose my spot. I was free to work on my skills and find my rhythm.
It is vital to remember that where a player starts is not where they end up. If a child isn't the fastest or the strongest right now, that is okay. Physical differences usually even out over time. As the years go by, the real differentiators become skills, vision, coachability, and work ethic. By the time I reached high school, I had passed many of the players who were on that "top team" years earlier. I eventually played college and professional soccer, while many of the players who were labeled "best" early on burned out and quit.
The Cycle of Success: Fun and Longevity
The ultimate goal of youth soccer is simple: we want them to keep playing. If they are having fun, they stay in the game. If they stay in the game, they keep practicing. And if they keep practicing, their growth continues to compound. This is the only way to reach higher levels of the sport. You cannot reach your full potential if you burn out or quit by age thirteen because the pressure outweighed the joy.
Winning is a wonderful feeling, but it is not our number one priority. Our priority is the child who leaves the field feeling more confident than when they arrived. We want them to look forward to seeing their friends at practice. When a child is having fun and feels supported, their ceiling for growth becomes limitless.
An Invitation to the Next Generation
To the parents reading this: we know you want the best for your children. You want them to be confident, resilient, and skilled. We invite you to see what our culture of development is all about. We want families in our community to experience how much more a child can achieve when the focus is on growth and enjoyment rather than just the scoreboard.
To support this, I am excited to announce that we are launching a Free Juniors Program this spring. This program is specifically for kids born between 2017 and 2019. These sessions will be held on dates throughout April and May, and I will be leading the training personally.
This is a chance for your child to learn new skills, move, and have fun with their friends in an environment built specifically for their development. There is no cost and no pressure. We simply want to share our love for the game with the next generation of players across the entire Miami Valley. Follow us on Facebook to stay-up-to-date when registration is live.
Please share this message with your friends and neighbors. We can't wait to see these young players on the pitch, hear the laughter between drills, and watch that compounding growth begin. Thank you for being a part of the Dayton Futbol Academy family.
Warmly,
Randall Walters
